Jessica Swedarsky has provided us with today's summary. Thanks, Jessica!
There is a story about a King who had an orchard with two types of tree. One type of trees bears fruit, while the other trees bear nothing. A servant asked the King “What do we get from planting a tree that does not bear fruit?” the King replied “ where would we get building material if not from trees?”
Fruit trees - we use what comes from it
Regular trees that don't have fruit - we use the actual tree
In the story the fruit trees represent Great Scholars (righteous people), while the non-fruit trees represent wicked people.
Wicked people while in Gehinom admit that their punishment was correct. They help teach us what not to do, and shows us the punishment.
An example of this is Korach. Korach's punishment before the entire nation demonstrated the truth of the Torah and the words of Moshe.
So which does Hashem prefer? The deeds of the righteous, because it is a constant day to day good deed.
