Diphtheria on Wednesdays

Rivka Cohen-Melamed sends in today's summary. Thanks, Rivka!

Why did Diptheria strike specifically on Wednesdays?
The Shaari Aharon quotes a source which says that the first day someone ever spoke lashon harah was on a Wednesday, and that lashon harah causes Diptheria, so that's why it would strike on Wednesdays.

The rays of the sun are at its strongest on Wednesday, because that was the day when the sun was created, and the sun helps heal those who are sick. So even though Diphtheria strikes on Wednesday, it also gets healed more easily on Wednesday.

Seforno says: just at the moon seems to disappear but comes
back.. it's the same with Jewish people. Even when they weaken and seem as if they will disappear they come back stronger than ever before.

The Midrash explains: It is a good sign that big counts big and small counts small. Esav counted by the sun because it is bigger. Yaakov counted by the moon because it was small. We know that the sun comes out during the day and not at night. Therefore since Esav went by the sun he only had Olam Hazeh. But the moon is visible both during the day and at night. Yaakov who went by the moon had both Olam Hazeh and Olam Habah.

What does that mean? We'll discuss it during our next class.
